Losing work, or finishing study without a job lined up, usually means the pay you planned around has stopped. JobSeeker Payment can fill some of that gap, but it's a smaller amount on a different rhythm, and the first fortnight on it can feel like starting a budget from scratch.

## What arrives each fortnight

JobSeeker Payment is paid every two weeks to people aged 22 to Age Pension age who are looking for work, or can't do their usual work for a while because of illness or injury. From 20 September 2026, the standard maximum for a single person without children is $824.90 a fortnight. The payment usually also includes an **Energy Supplement** of $8.80 a fortnight towards household energy costs.

If you're eligible, [Rent Assistance](/blog/rent-assistance) is added to the same payment. For a single person sharing a house it's up to $149.20 a fortnight, and up to $223.80 for someone living alone, depending on your rent. Rates change on 20 March and 20 September each year, so the amount in your Centrelink account is the one to plan with.

Ella, who's made up, is 24 and lost her retail job a month ago. She rents a room in a share house for $200 a week and has no other income. Her payment is the full $824.90, the $8.80 Energy Supplement and the full $149.20 of Rent Assistance for sharers: $982.90 a fortnight.

The first payment usually arrives about two weeks after a claim is approved, and you'll need to report your income before it's paid. If you had savings or were paid out leave when your job ended, a waiting period can push it back further. Centrelink tells you when you claim if one applies.

## Set the rent aside first

Two weeks of rent has to come out of each payment before anything else. Setting it aside the day the payment lands shows what's really left.

| Ella's fortnight | Amount (AUD) |
| --- | ---: |
| Payment: JobSeeker, Energy Supplement and Rent Assistance | $982.90 |
| Two weeks of rent | $400 |
| Left for food, transport, bills and everything else | $582.90 |

Rent takes four in every ten dollars. Ella is made up. Rates for a single sharer from 20 September 2026.

That $583 has to cover food, transport, phone, a share of the household bills and anything personal for two weeks. Planning these amounts early helps you see whether the fortnight will cover them.

| Cost | Fortnightly amount (AUD) |
| ------------------------------------------ | -----------------------: |
| Rent | $400 |
| Groceries | $180 |
| Transport, including getting to interviews | $60 |
| Share of power and internet | $50 |
| Phone | $30 |
| Health and personal | $40 |
| Kept for less frequent bills and surprises | $222.90 |
| **Total** | **$982.90** |

Ella's allowances are illustrative, not measured averages or current prices. Swap in your own rent and fares first, since those vary most from city to city.

A few things can make the same payment go further. People on JobSeeker can get a **Health Care Card**, which Centrelink posts without an application, for cheaper medicines and some discounts; ask your transport and energy providers which concessions they offer. [Centrepay](https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/centrepay) is free and can deduct rent or bills for participating businesses from your payment. Our [grocery budget guide](/blog/grocery-budget) helps find a food amount from your own receipts rather than a guess.

## What a few shifts do to the payment

Casual work doesn't automatically end JobSeeker. Centrelink looks at your **gross** pay each fortnight, the amount before tax. For a single person without children, the first $150 doesn't reduce the payment. Between $150 and $256, the payment drops by 50 cents for each dollar; above $256, by 60 cents.

With no Working Credit left, Ella earns $400 before tax from two shifts. Her payment drops by $139.40: 50 cents on each of the $106 between $150 and $256, and 60 cents on each of the $144 above it.

| Ella's fortnight | Payment (AUD) | Wages before tax (AUD) | Total (AUD) |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| No shifts | $982.90 | $0 | $982.90 |
| Two shifts | $843.50 | $400 | $1,243.50 |

Every dollar of wages still adds to the fortnight: the first $150 in full, the next $106 at 50 cents in the dollar and anything above $256 at 40 cents. Two shifts leave Ella $260.60 better off, before tax on the wages. Ella is made up and has no Working Credit. Income test for a single person, 2026.

Tax can come out of those wages too, depending on how you answer the tax-free threshold question on the job's paperwork. Centrelink usually uses your threshold already, so our guide to [the tax-free threshold](/blog/tax-free-threshold) explains which payer should have it.

Report your gross pay every two weeks, even when it's $0, through your Centrelink online account, the Express Plus Centrelink app or 133 276. If you don't report, the payment stops, and reporting less than you were paid can lead to a debt you have to repay.

**Working Credit** builds when your income apart from Centrelink is under $48 a fortnight, up to 48 credits each fortnight and 1,000 in total. Each credit covers $1 of later wages before the income test starts, so credits built over quiet fortnights can protect your payment when work starts.

## Keep the payment coming

Alongside reporting, JobSeeker comes with **mutual obligation requirements**: the job searches, appointments, training or other activities you agree to while getting the payment. If you can't meet a requirement, contact your provider or Workforce Australia Online before it's due to discuss your options.

## When the fortnight doesn't stretch

If a single cost breaks the plan, an **advance payment** can help: after three months on JobSeeker you can apply for $250 to $500 of your payment early, then repay it through smaller payments over the next 13 fortnights. It comes out of your own future payments, so check first that the smaller payments will still cover rent.

For a fridge, laptop or rental bond, a [No Interest Loan](/blog/no-interest-loans) charges no interest or fees. For a bill you can't pay on time, the business you owe usually has a hardship process, and our guide to [asking for hardship help](/blog/financial-hardship-assistance) covers what to say. If debts are building up, the [National Debt Helpline](https://ndh.org.au/) on **1800 007 007** offers free financial counselling, and our guide to [free financial counselling](/blog/free-financial-counselling) explains what a session involves.

## A plan that carries over

A JobSeeker budget is mostly about covering the essentials, and getting each fortnight's rent and food sorted counts for a lot. The habits it builds, setting the rent aside first and giving the rest a job, carry straight over to a pay when work comes back.

## A note from us

Living on one payment leaves little room for guessing, so knowing where each dollar is going matters more. We are building Clova so the money that lands, from Centrelink or a shift, gets a plan the same day.

## Common questions

### How much is JobSeeker Payment?

From 20 September 2026, the standard maximum for a single person without children is $824.90 a fortnight, plus an $8.80 Energy Supplement. Rent Assistance can add up to $149.20 a fortnight for a single person sharing, or $223.80 living alone, if your rent is high enough. Rates change on 20 March and 20 September each year.

### How much can you earn on JobSeeker?

For a single person without children, the usual cut-off is $1,557.17 a fortnight. Rent Assistance can raise it, and Working Credit can let you earn more before payment stops.

### Who can get JobSeeker Payment?

People aged 22 to Age Pension age who are unemployed and looking for work, working part time or casually, or temporarily unable to work because of illness or injury. You also need to meet the residence rules and the income and assets tests.

### What happens if I earn too much in a fortnight?

If employment income reduces your payment to $0, you can keep reporting for up to 12 consecutive fortnights. Payments restart automatically if your income falls below the cut-off during that period and you still qualify.

### Do I pay tax on JobSeeker?

JobSeeker is taxable, so it goes on your tax return. Centrelink usually applies your tax-free threshold to it. If you also earn wages, you can ask Centrelink to deduct tax from the payment to avoid a bill at tax time.

### Can I get JobSeeker if I have savings?

Yes, within the assets test. Readily available savings can also delay your first payment by 1 to 13 weeks.
