How this estimate works
The calculator takes your yearly salary and applies the 2026–27 income tax rates for Australian residents. It takes off the low income tax offset, a tax cut of up to $700 for lower incomes (the ATO calls it LITO), then adds the 2% Medicare levy and any HELP repayment. What’s left is divided by 52, 26 or 12 pays.
Those figures are for $75,000 a year with no HELP debt. It’s a yearly estimate shown per pay, not the ATO’s withholding schedule, so the tax on your payslip can be a little different.
Your employer works out each pay’s tax using the tax-free threshold choice on your TFN declaration. If you don’t claim it, more is held back each pay, but your tax for the full year is the same. That’s why choosing “No” doesn’t change the estimate here.
Who it suits and what it leaves out
It suits someone who is an Australian resident for tax all year, single, under pension age, with one job and a tax file number. Enter your cash salary before tax, without the super your employer pays on top.
It leaves out salary sacrifice and salary packaging, other income, deductions, fringe benefits, other tax offsets, Medicare levy exemptions and family reductions, the Medicare levy surcharge and HELP family reductions.
The Medicare levy uses the current $28,011 lower threshold for singles. Below it you pay no levy; above it the levy phases in at 10 cents for each extra dollar until it reaches 2% of your income. The 2026–27 thresholds can still change later in the year.
The HELP repayment assumes you still owe enough to repay the full amount, and that your repayment income is your salary. It uses the exact rates in the law, so above $129,717 the base amount is $9,028.35 rather than the ATO table’s rounded $9,028.
Super is shown at 12% on top of your salary, assuming all of it counts for super. It goes to your super fund, not your bank account, and the real amount can differ. For your actual payslip, use the ATO tax withheld calculator. The ATO simple tax calculator only covers years up to 2025–26 so far, so our 2026–27 figures come straight from the published rates.
