Couples bill planner

Compare a few ways to split the bills, then check whether the money arrives before the first payment is due. Use the result to talk through an arrangement you both agree to.

Step 1 · Compare the split

Compare your arrangement

Use take-home income and costs per month. The same figures carry into step 2.

Include costs you both agree come before personal money, paid after take-home. Leave out payroll deductions already removed.

Uses the example's other figures.

Grey: bills · Pale: own costs · Full colour: left
Shared scale: $0 to $6,000.

Equal dollars

You pay $2,700$2,700 left
$6,000 pay · $600 own costs
Partner pays $2,700$900 left
$4,000 pay · $400 own costs

Proportional

You pay $3,240$2,160 left
$6,000 pay · $600 own costs
Partner pays $2,160$1,440 left
$4,000 pay · $400 own costs

Equal leftover

You pay $3,600$1,800 left
$6,000 pay · $600 own costs
Partner pays $1,800$1,800 left
$4,000 pay · $400 own costs

Amounts round to cents; the second person’s share balances the total. This compares responsibility, not payment timing. It doesn't calculate tax or benefits.

Step 2 · Check the dates

Will the first bill be covered?

Using step 1 · per month

Keep the pays, own costs and split from above. Add each person’s next payday and the one or two bills you want to check. The dates below are examples you can change.

How the calculation works

Assumes each person puts their agreed share into bill money on payday, after their own costs. Money already in the bill account reduces the new contributions needed here. Any shared budget beyond these bills is set aside for later at the end.

Bills go before pay on the same day. If your pay clears first, check with the money already available instead. This checks only the bills you enter, not every cost for the month. No bank transfers are made.

Shares round to cents. An exact half cent in the equal-leftover split goes to the first person; the second person’s share balances the total.

Reading your bill plan

The coloured bars show what each person keeps after their contribution and own costs. The first person is navy, the second is ochre. A split can add up for the month and still leave the first bill short.

If someone pays early from savings, it counts towards their share, and they top their savings back up from later pay. Agree that separately before moving any money.

This is a planning tool. It doesn’t link your money or accounts.

Figures are for discussion and planning. Check the amounts and dates against your actual bills and usable pay. Nothing you enter here is saved.
